Inner Child Healing Exercises You Can Actually Do at Home

Most inner child healing lists give you the same five exercises. Write a letter. Hug an old photo. Meditate on your younger self. I have tried all of them with clients, and with myself. Some genuinely help. Others fall flat, and almost nobody explains why.

Why the checklist alone doesn’t get you there

Here is what I have noticed after years of doing this work. Reading about your inner child is a cognitive exercise. Healing it is a felt one. You can know, intellectually, that you were not loved the way you needed as a child. Knowing that changes very little on its own.

The exercises below work best when you stop trying to think your way through them, and let yourself actually feel something instead, even if it is uncomfortable.

Exercise 1: The two-chair conversation

Set up two chairs facing each other. Sit in one. Picture your younger self, at whatever age feels most present right now, sitting in the other.

Say out loud what you needed to hear back then. Not what you think you should say. What you actually needed. Then switch chairs, sit as your younger self, and let them respond.

It feels strange the first time. Most of my clients laugh, or cry, usually both, within the first two minutes.

Exercise 2: The letter you never send

Write a letter to your inner child. Not a polished one. Write it the way you would talk if no one was reading it.

The part that actually matters is what you do after. Do not send it anywhere, do not post it, do not read it back for grammar. Fold it up and keep it somewhere private, or burn it if that feels more honest. The letter is not for anyone else to see. It is proof, to yourself, that the words exist.

Exercise 3: The five-minute body check

Next time you feel a disproportionate reaction to something small, a sharp comment, being left on read, someone raising their voice, pause for five minutes before responding.

Ask yourself: how old do I feel right now. Not how old you are. How old the reaction feels. Most people are surprised by the answer.

A client’s story

A client I will call Mei did the letter exercise faithfully for four months before she came to see me. She told me it felt like writing into a void. Nothing shifted.

What we found, once we worked together in a hypnotherapy session, was that she had never actually let herself access the memory the letter was written about. She had written around it, carefully, the way most of us do when something still hurts. The conscious mind is very good at protecting itself that way.

Once she could actually sit inside that memory, guided and safe, rather than describe it from a distance, something in her changed within a single session. Not because the letter was wrong. Because writing alone could not reach where the wound actually lived.

Where hypnotherapy actually helps

Journaling, letters, and body check-ins are genuinely useful. I recommend all three to clients. But they work on the conscious mind, and inner child wounds are usually stored somewhere the conscious mind cannot fully reach on its own.

Hypnotherapy is not about losing control or being put under. It is a guided, relaxed state where the part of you that has been protecting that younger self for decades can finally soften enough to let the work happen.

If you have tried the exercises above and felt like something was still stuck, that is not a sign you are doing it wrong. It is often a sign you are ready for the next layer.
